Inspiration Corner: Christina Schmitt Studio Visit
This past week I had the pleasure of visiting the studio of Brooklyn-based artist and writer, Christina Schmitt. She was so gracious with her time and openness, we conversed for hours. Christina was born and raised in New York City and attended schools that fostered her creativity. Her father was an architect and mother was involved with the fashion industry, primarily as a seamstress and pattern-maker. When I first saw Christina's work, I noticed many parallels to textile design in the boldness of certain colors and repetition of motifs. I was instantly drawn to her work. As someone who academically excelled in mathematics, Christina continues to carry the mysteries of arithmetic and geometry into her art. Her newest body of work is called 'Energetic Geometries,' in which she explores how 'light is energy.' She moves between poetry and creating physical works of art with her hands. There is searching in her work that I find most inspiring. For more information on Christina and to see more of her work, visit her website, www.christinaschmitt.net.
